Dance is in the Air - February 2016

Dance is in the air!!!Hello and Happy New Year! Although the Christmas and New Year break are a distant memory at this stage, I hope you found time to rest and enjoy the company of friends and family without the chaotic schedules of ‘normal’ life! I, myself, enjoyed the break with a back injury (picking up a toddler while wearing heels…tut tut..), a vomiting bug and now a cold and eye infection. Gotta love Winter!! Haha. I expect a full and healthy recovery to last me well into Spring and Summer!
FYI DANCE CLUB
Our Second Term closed with a lovely week of performances as we opened the studio doors to the families and friends of FYI to enjoy a cup of tea, mince pies and class performances. My intention was to give family members the opportunity to see what goes on inside the studio during class time as well as the choreography we had been working on for the Christmas Extravaganza. There was a great turn out for the younger groups and our eldest groups had their own little Christmas party! A select number of students then met again at the weekend for a final rehearsal before a fantastic performance in Rathdrum on the 22nd December at 'Kerry’s Christmas Extravaganza'. I managed to contain myself and only order ONE item at the pop up Dancewear shop and was very grateful all our dancers fit on the stage for our final dance to “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree”. Oh how I love my Tacky Cheesy Christmas Dances!!

TERM THREE: Now we’re already well into Term 3 (these next 3 terms are either 5,6 or 7 weeks long depending on public holidays. Donna has her work cut out figuring out each class!!) so each group has been busy discussing and deciding on songs for new choreography with the aim to put on another display towards the end of the year (May/June). We are currently investigating venues and dates and will keep you posted! We will be involving ourselves in Wicklow's St.Patrick’s Day this year (we now do every second year so students can alternate with their clubs and schools) so if you’d be interesting in marching or performing with us we’ll be collecting names after February Mid-Term.

FEBRUARY MID-TERM: We will take a full week’s break the 15th-18th February to coincide with School mid-term.

EASTER BREAK: We will run classes on Monday 14th -Wednesday 16th March, do St. Patrick's Day on the 17th then there will be NO classes until Monday 4th April.

PERFORMANCE GROUP: I am interested in putting together a Saturday group for students who have a keen interest in Performing. We often receive requests to perform at local events and I would like to have a group geared up and ready with a repertoire to perform. We are seeking either a morning (10-12pm) or after noon (2-4pm) or evening (4-6pm) option and if you think you’d like to be part of this group please text us on 086 173 82 72 with your preferred time slot if you haven't already.

And so thank you for taking the time to read our latest newsletter. If you have any feedback about anything FYI just hit ‘reply’!
See you in the studio,
Zoe

DISCo: DANCE IN SCHOOL:
I had a lovely 5 week stint in Ballycanew National School that spanned before and after Christmas. It was lovely to see the new building with the extensive ASD units with state of the art facilities. I was with the mainstream students who were as welcome as ever!
I am now in my third 6-week block with Ashford National School which will culminate with a full day celebration for Seachtain Na Gaeilge on 11th March and I have also started my usual 8 week contract in Rathdrum Boys School. I have also been invited to a new school, St. Saviour’s In Rathdrum where I get 4 lovely sessions with Infants up to second class. Its a busy time of the year. I also start my second contract with Redcross school next week also teaching infants-2nd class! Phew! I'll definitely need my Easter Break I think!
WICKLOW YOUTH DANCE COMPANY
We are busy in our new venue of Greystones Studios preparing for this year’s project: a musical written by Director Anne McIntyre, Snow: The Musical. The cast has been chosen and more than half the dance works have been completed. We three directors met over this Christmas break to finalise the script, written by Anne, and to discuss venues, lighting, sound (16 microphones at last count I think!!), costumes and all the other nitty gritty details. Watch this space for venue details and Ill let you know when tickets go on sale! This is the first venture into the land of musicals for the youth company but they are taking it all in their stride! Fantastic!
MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME
And so my lovely mentorship with Brigitte Moody of University of Limerick is coming to a close. We have one final Skype meeting before signing off and sending our review to Dance UK. I have really learnt so much from her lifetime of knowledge and experience in the dance-teaching world and look forward to continuing with my leads and expanding my knowledge. My organisation connection continues and I spent a full day in the North in January. Leaving at 7AM  I travelled to Belfast where I spent the day in the DuDance office learning about the structure and organisation of the company as well as a brief trip to visit some dance hotspots! I then travelled out to Dungannon to watch some dance-in-the-community workshops before heading back home. A full-on day, but one where I felt extremely welcome and looked after. I hope to repeat the trip again soon with maybe a skills-swap thrown in!

Happenings at FYI DANCE CLUB Christmas 2015

Happenings at FYI Dance Club!!!

We’re halfway through Term 2! I find after settling in during Term 1 time tends to speed up as we gain momentum and raise productivity! Term 1 finished with a bang, with Halloween themed classes (full on with costumes, Halloween dance games and spooky routines), which coinciding with Bring-A-Friend-Week made for a hilarious (and somewhat chaotic, ahem) classes. I nearly didn’t make it out alive (no pun intended!!) The Halloween break was a welcome reprieve and a chance to catch up with myself and all the goals I had had set at the start of Term 1.

One goal was to get to see a show, but I actually got to see two! The first was Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty, a modern adaptation fusing contemporary dance with ballet influences and even brought act two into the 21st century. I had seen Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake last year (thank you husband for the gift) and was blown away by his interpretation of this classic ballet story. I definitely was not disappointed this time around and can firmly claim I am now a devoted fan of his work! It was so refreshing to experience ballet theatre without a Nutcracker in sight!! Haha! We have been limited in our experience of touring companies but the Bord Gais Theatre seems to be attracting more and more dance companies to grace our shores (including some fantastic musical theatre!!).

The second show required me to take a trip on two planes and six trains to get there and back (now four of them were on the London Underground so it wasn't QUITE as dramatic as I'm making out!!). I headed on a day trip to London to see Hip Hop company ZooNation perform their original West End production of ‘Into The Hoods’, first put on in 2006, this was the ‘Remixed’ version. I was lucky enough to take a class with ZooNation’s founder and choreographer Kate Prince at Hip Hop Don’t Stop (the Streetdance Camp I attend to brush up on my skills) in Easter 2012 and returned to see their production of ‘Some Like It Hip Hop” in June of the same year. ZooNation are the only Hip Hop company to perform on the West End and the original 'Into The Hoods' is the longest running show on the West End! So when my husband remarked that I was ‘going to a lot of trouble just to see a show' (I hear you all gasp!!) I can confidently say it was worth it. It is difficult to find full-length, stand-alone Hip Hop productions (if you ever hear of one please let me know!!). Here’s hoping Diversity have another trilogy coming soon!!
Here’s some footage of the original cast: https://youtu.be/Jlq48nnJpkQ and the trailer for Remixed: https://youtu.be/wjdarOR20Ho and https://youtu.be/dy6enS8akO4

While I was travelling I also managed to squeeze in some study with Daniel Coyles The Talent Code: Greatness isn’t Born, its Grown. A fascinating read about talent hot spots around the world and the factors that contribute to world talent from all areas of greatness: football, singers, tennis players, musicians etc. I have been chatting to the students this week about my findings (one student groaned at me that this was a dance class not a science class! Haha). My studies on Brain Gym (Educational Kinesiology) and Autism Awareness continues.
