Got a great blog this week from my mentor Andy from Urban Strides. Get some history and watch a vid. Well worth subscribing to, too. :)
Check out this link I got from an urban strides family member. A 6 year old girl battling for breakin competition!!
For those of you out there who live to know authentic information about the true roots of street (and other) dance, check out this link dispelling this current 'Harlem Shake' craze that's sweeping the globe. Yes, it seems like good fun (in some cases just silly really, in my opinion, haha) but yes I am bothered how it is spreading incorrect information, so check out the clip attached and get educated. I'm sure these videos will continue to be made, all in the name of fun, but as long as the authentic information is being spread along side it, I'll settle with that... Maybe. :)
Follow this link for an awesome video & info from my mentor, Andy of Urban Strides and his blog on Suga Pop. Definitely worth a look if you're interested in AUTHENTIC street dance information!!
AUTHENTIC STREETDANCE INFORMATION ALERT!! FROM SASHA-BREAKIN TEACHER AT URBAN STRIDES:"For those who are confused by the 'harlem shake' videos. Video clips where you see people half naked humping the air to the 'harlem shake' song by Baauer have no reference to the original harlem shake dance. This internet meme was started by teenagers in australia and then spread by the public.
The one and original Harlem shake is a dance originated in 1981 in Harlem, NY. It was later featured in many hip-hop music videos including 'Let's Get it' by Gdep and 'Put ya hands up' by Jadakiss.
If you didn't know, now you know!
Don't assume, Go research!"
U KNOW WUT IT IS!
U KNOW WUT IT IS!
Hey good students!!
Here's the 2 links we watched in class in Rathdrum BNS today (Wednesday 30-1-13)
1. Kimberly Wyatt (judge on GTD), dance with dancer I was lucky enough to take class with at Urban Strides
2. Mechanikool audition at Got to Dance. An amazing humble dude I am lucky enough to get taught by at Urban Strides in the UK. Well done Alex. Epic!
So it's nearly time... Summer camps have finished, a week-long annual Street Workshop in the UK with Urban strides has been attended, I even managed to fit in a holiday (I hear a lot of you gasp!). And now the new timetable is awaiting confirmation from the Community Centre and then we can be underway!
Priority registration for FYI members continues this year (until Friday 24th August at 18.00) allowing current members to get their names down before public enrollment. Some students will either be moving up a level or moving classes, but if you have any questions do give us buzz, or text/email to double check you get the right class. The majority of classes book up quickly so it is recommended to contact us sooner rather than later!
New for this year is priority booking for Summer camp students. We had 3 amazing weeks this year with a large number of motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic young people. We'd love to give something back to say thanks, and so are setting a second priority booking phase before public registration (27th-31st August 2012).
Public registration opens 3rd September 2012!
To register just contact us with your name and preferred class and we'll get you booked in!
Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Welcome back to all! I hope you've had a great summer break. Mine has certainly been busy!! With a major European project in July (see July blogs), along with summer camps, a couple of Regatta performances and workshops, more streetdance training with Urban strides in the UK (yes I am obsessed!!) and a new workshop in August: 'Intro to Streetdance'!
After much thought and soul searching I have come to a difficult decision to drop some classes from our 2010/11 timetable. It has become apparent to me, that to push the school to the next level, I must specialise!! I have absolutely relished in my new authentic streetdance training, and have a desire to keep my roots in Jazz. And so with further education and a need to deliver classes as authentically as I can, the new timetable is published!!
Our new 'COMMERCIAL' classes will deliver fun routines, as we have in the past, but with less emphasis on the Hip Hop technique, which can be limiting in choice of music and moves. By renaming the class 'COMMERCIAL' allows a new freedom of choreography and music.
The 'STREETDANCE' classes continue, but with a new age restriction. Due to the complexity and strength required to perform the majority of moves, along with history and level of information delivered, I have raised the age group to 9 to attract a level of maturity and dedication required. We have a beginners class on a Saturday that students can start at 8yrs, but the Tuesday classes are reserved for students who attended classes last year. I believe this will encourage students to really work hard to become accomplished at each style of streetdance delivered: poppin', lockin', breakin', waving and gliding. Oh the excitement!!!!!!
Our SENIOR classes have now an extended class time from 60 to 75 minutes. I always seem to run out of time with still so much to teach, and I feel students in this age bracket are well able for the extra time, and extra choreography!. I would appreciate any feedback to this change. I have adjusted the fees accordingly, but actually means overall the classes are cheaper than before!
Our CHEERLEADING and MUSICAL THEATRE classes will no longer continue. I have noticed a recent surge in musical theatre or Glee style classes in the town, and feel these classes require more of a singing influence than dance (and im no singer! Just ask my family, haha!!). Students who enjoyed the dance aspect of the classes will find the JAZZ or COMMERCIAL classes similar in style. As with the CHEERLEADING classes, I feel to bring the school to the next level I need to specialise. However specialising in CHEERLEADING, and delivering classes to a higher standard would require a gymnastics background, and with that, gymnastic equipment (yikes!!). Ill stick to the breakin' methinks!!
The ADULT classes are also stepping up a gear, with requests for a more current streetdance feel. Classes will remain fitness based (go cardio, whoop whoop!!) Ill be throwing in a few Hip Hop party and Lockin' moves! Dont diss it til you've tried it! Anyone remember Soul Train? Then you'll surely recognise a move or two. Wanna learn a few Michael Jackson trade mark moves, or try some more modern commercial moves? Then get thee to class! Drop us a line here or at email@example.com to let me know what you think! There is no age limit to these classes. If you like to dance and want to up your fitness levels in a fun way, then this is the class for you!
And so our new season begins. Do please drop us a line/text or call if anything on this website is confusing, if I'Ve left any important information out or if you have any questions. Remember priority booking for FYI members lasts until Midnight on Thursday 25th August. If you have filled out an application form last year, then a simple text to 0861738272 with the student NAME & CLASS will book you a spot. If you are new to FYI then drop down to the studio on Friday 26th August to try out a class, have a chat or enrole. Full details on the bottom of the timetable page.
Hope to see you soon!!
Zoe (Head of FYI)
This is going to be one of the biggest events in Wicklow this summer. Approximately 40 students from all over Europe are arriving in Wicklow on Monday 4th July to take part in a week long workshop (with me!) leading up to a FREE performance on Saturday 9th July at Fatima Hall. 5 of our FYI students have been rehearsing with me to create a new piece to be performed at this event. Now we have a slot for YOU!! Get yourself to rehearsals on Thursday 7th & Friday 8th July 3pm-4.30pm. There will be a full dress rehearsal on Saturday (9th) 12.30-2.30 with the show starting at 7pm. All members of the public are welcome (and encouraged!!) to attend! Hope to see you there!!
